Language

*Language is the way we use words to share ideas and gain information. A disorder in the area of language may be expressive, receptive or mixed.

Fluency

*Speech disfluency characterized by repetitions, prolongations and blocks. May include tension and negative feelings about talking.

Articulation/Phonology/Apraxia

*Speech sound disorders occur when a child substitutes one sound for another, changes a sound in a word, leaves the sound out completely, or adds a sound. This condition leads to unintelligible speech.

Pragmatics

*Difficulty using language for social communication

Aphasia

*An acquired neurogenic language disorder resulting from an injury to the brain. Affects spoken language expression, written expression, spoken language comprehension, and reading comprehension

Dementia

*Syndrome resulting from acquired brain disease. It is characterized by a progressive decline in memory and other cognitive domains.

Pediatric Feeding Disorders

*Feeding disorders are difficulties with different eating activities that may or may not include problems with swallowing.

Selective mutism

*Complex anxiety disorder that affects pragmatic language.

Literacy

*The ability to read and write. These skills are important for school, at work, and at home. Speech-language pathologists, or SLPs, can help you learn to read and write.
